Free Software
It generally has a copyright, owner and license and is not in the public domain because when it becomes a public domain then someone can tweak or change it and redistribute it with a fee. That is why they have the concept of “Copy left” this gives permission to redistribute, to add or to change it but when someone redistributes it, it should be under these terms no more and no less, so that everywhere the software goes the same freedom goes with it too.
Open Source
It is a way to collaborate software without having problems about intellectual property because in general, the user just wants software that works. And it means that the source code is out there. And it is free to redistribute, source code is available for the maintenance of the program of software, derived works are permitted it means that if someone improves the program then they can redistribute it, integrity of the author’s source code if someone changes the code then it should be imposed that it was already changed, no discrimination against persons or groups this means that no one can stop anyone from using the software or the program, no discrimination against fields of endeavour the software should be useable in both business as well as in school, distribution of license the license can be passed over, license must not be specific to a product for example this product cannot be used on this specific product it can only be used in this product, and license must not contaminate other software for example if you distribute my software with another software then that software should be also be an open source if not then you can’t distribute my software this cannot be done to an open source software.
Cathedral Style vs. Bazaar Style
Cathedral style is a closed development style, tight specification on objectives on small projects which is running in a hierarchal and authoritarian manner it is the most common type of style used especially in closed source type of Software Company.
Bazaar style more on peer to peer, decentralized market and intense peer review, it is used by the open source community that is why it is said to be successful because the users themselves are given the freedom to edit the software the way they like it. And have the freedom to post it in the internet and distribute it. It is said in the video that the open source method or the bazaar style is successful because of its peer to peer review
Reaction:
I got used to using Microsoft as an operating system, I never knew of a Mac or Linux before, I only found out about them when I was already in college. Watching this video made me realize that there are people out there trying to open the minds of people that there are far better software’s that are not made by the companies that we are used to using when it comes to computers. But there is a problem I for myself don’t know how to use non-Microsoft products because I am used to it, shifting to a Mac was already hard not in terms of learning it but on getting used to it, is it going to be same with open source?
